Real-time insights, real results: Retail inventory success story

A retail chain with over 850 stores was struggling with outdated inventory management practices. Their reliance on manual inventory counting across all locations led to inaccurate data and lost sales opportunities. This problem was compounded by a disconnected supply chain system that failed to provide a holistic view of stock levels. Furthermore, manual processes and multiple data transfers resulted in reports being delivered with significantly outdated information, hindering their ability to make informed decisions about product availability and restocking.

Revolutionizing inventory management: A data lakehouse-powered approach

To address their inventory challenges, the retail chain partnered with Ascendion to implement a comprehensive data-driven solution. Ascendion started by creating a data value map, which identified the critical data points needed for effective inventory management. This map then informed the development of a robust Supply Chain Management (SCM) process, ensuring efficient product flow and accurate stock levels.

The foundation of the solution was a data Lakehouse architecture built on Azure services. This architecture seamlessly integrated various data sources, creating a single source of truth (SSOT) for inventory information.  Furthermore, Ascendion designed and implemented streaming and batch data pipelines specifically for customer data domains, ensuring real-time insights into customer behavior and buying patterns. Airflow, an open-source workflow management platform, was then utilized to orchestrate and manage dependencies within the data pipelines, guaranteeing smooth data flow throughout the system.
